NAIROBI - Two drug mules were arrested on Thursday and 700 grams of cocaine valued at Sh2.8 million seized from them in Nairobi’s Fedha estate.
The suspects, a man and a woman, were apprehended during a police operation aimed at taming the rising cases of drug trafficking, possession and consumption in the city.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the duo had concealed the drugs in their luggage and were planning to deliver them to an undisclosed location.
The DCI said the cocaine was of high purity and had been smuggled into the country
from a neighbouring state through a porous border.
The arrest comes amid increased efforts by the authorities to crack down on the illicit drug trade that has been blamed for fuelling crime and violence in some parts of the country.
The DCI urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities or persons involved in drug trafficking to the nearest police station or call the toll-free number 0800-722-203.
The two suspects are expected to be arraigned in court on Friday to face charges of drug trafficking, which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
