The police have launched an investigation into the brutal killing of Starlet Wahu Mwangi, a Nairobi socialite and a relative of Pastor Victor Kanyari, who was stabbed to death in a rented apartment in South B estate on Wednesday night.
According to the police, Wahu, 26, had checked into the apartment, which operates as an Airbnb, with a man identified as John Matara at around 9 pm. CCTV footage shows that when they arrived, Wahu was wearing a red dress, a blue denim coat and black high-heeled shoes while the man was wearing a blue shirt with black stripes, khaki trousers and boots1.
The police said they recovered an HIV test kit, condoms, alcohol and drugs from the scene, indicating that the couple had taken an HIV test before the murder2. They also found a kitchen knife stained with blood, which is believed to be the murder weapon.
The police suspect that Wahu was killed after a quarrel with Matara, who fled the scene after the incident. They are still looking for him and have appealed to anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigations.
Wahu’s body was found by the caretaker of the apartment, who alerted the police after he noticed blood oozing from under the door. The police said Wahu had multiple stab wounds on her chest, back and neck. Her body was taken to the City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Wahu was a well-known socialite who had a large following on social media. She was also a sister to Pastor Kanyari, the controversial preacher who was exposed for faking miracles and conning his followers3.
Wahu’s murder has shocked many of her fans and friends, who have taken to social media to express their condolences and demand justice for her. Some of them have also questioned the security and safety of Airbnb services in the city, which have been linked to several crimes in the past.
