Five people are nursing serious injuries after a minibus they were travelling in lost control and overturned along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway on Wednesday.
The accident occurred at Luqman Corner near Maanzoni Lodge in Athi River, Machakos County, around 2 p.m.
Athi River South subcounty police commander Jos Mudavadi said the minibus, belonging to UMOWA Sacco, was heading to Nairobi from Mombasa when the driver lost control due to a tyre burst.
"The driver tried to avoid hitting an oncoming vehicle and swerved off the road, causing the minibus to roll several times," Mudavadi said.
He said the injured passengers were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
Mudavadi said several other passengers sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
He urged motorists to observe road safety rules and ensure their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on long journeys.
He also cautioned drivers against speeding and overtaking recklessly, especially on busy highways.
The accident caused a traffic snarl-up on the highway, which was cleared by police officers who arrived at the scene.
The wreckage of the minibus was towed to Athi River Police Station, where investigations are ongoing.
