A 27-year-old woman took her own life in Umiru village, Siaya County, after failing to secure a job, police said on Wednesday.

The body of Vera Okoth was found hanging in her bathroom by her mother on Tuesday morning, according to the area chief, Samuel Ochieng.

Ochieng said the deceased had been depressed for a long time due to lack of employment and had attempted suicide before.

"She had a diploma in business administration but she could not find a job. She had applied for many jobs but she was always rejected. She felt hopeless and frustrated," Ochieng said.

He added that the family had tried to counsel and encourage her, but she did not show any signs of improvement.

The chief urged the youth to seek help from professionals or religious leaders when they face challenges in life, instead of resorting to suicide.

He also appealed to the government and the private sector to create more opportunities for the youth, especially in the rural areas, to curb the rising cases of unemployment and suicide.

The body of the deceased was taken to Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.

Police have launched investigations into the incident.
