A 14-year-old girl from Alego Usonga in Siaya County is facing a dilemma after she was selected to join a boys’ boarding school in Nairobi City County for her secondary education.
Gloria Adhiambo Owino, who scored 389 marks in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams, was shocked to receive an admission letter from Moi Forces Academy, a national boys’ school located in Eastleigh, Nairobi.
“I was very happy when I saw my results, but when I checked the school I was called to, I could not believe it. How can they send me to a boys’ school?” Gloria said.
Gloria, who schooled at Nyalgunga Primary School, said she had applied for girls’ schools such as Alliance Girls High School, Loreto High School Limuru, and Starehe Girls Centre as her first, second, and third choices respectively.
She said she had no idea how Moi Forces Academy came to be her fourth choice, and suspected that there was a mix-up in the placement process.
“I have never heard of that school before. I don’t know anyone who goes there. I don’t even know where it is. I don’t want to go there,” she said.
Gloria’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Owino, said they were equally puzzled and worried by their daughter’s predicament.
They said they had tried to contact the Ministry of Education and the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to seek clarification and assistance, but their efforts were futile.
“We have been calling the numbers they gave us, but no one is picking up. We have also sent emails, but no reply. We don’t know what to do,” Mr. Owino said.
He said they could not afford to take their daughter to a private school, and appealed to the relevant authorities to intervene and rectify the situation.
“We are appealing to the Cabinet Secretary for Education, the KNEC CEO, and anyone who can help us to please look into this matter and help our daughter. She deserves to go to a school of her choice and pursue her dreams,” he said.
The admission date for Form One students is January 15, 2024.
