At least 22 people have sustained injuries after an accident at Karai area near Keroche along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway on Wednesday morning. According to St John Ambulance, many of the passengers were students who were on their way back to school after the holidays.
The accident occurred when a matatu carrying the students collided head-on with a van. The impact caused both vehicles to veer off the road and overturn. The casualties received on-site first aid and were taken to Naivasha Referral Hospital for further treatment.
The hospital's medical superintendent, Dr. Joseph Mburu, said that most of the injured had soft tissue injuries and fractures, but none of them were in critical condition. He added that the hospital had enough capacity and resources to handle the situation.
The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. The Nairobi-Nakuru Highway is notorious for fatal road crashes, especially at the Karai black spot where several lives have been lost in the past.
The incident comes a day after 15 people died in another accident along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway. The accident involved a bus and a 14-seater matatu. The victims included eight adults and seven children, five of them girls. Police said that all occupants of the matatu lost their lives, while three bus passengers sustained serious injuries and 10 others had minor injuries.
Rift Valley police chief Tom Odero appealed to all motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads and observe traffic rules to prevent road carnage. He also urged drivers to avoid overloading and speeding, especially during the rainy season. He said that the police would intensify patrols and crackdowns on rogue drivers and unroadworthy vehicles.
