Richard Franklin, a British actor best known for his roles in Doctor Who and Emmerdale, has died at the age of 81. He passed away peacefully in his sleep on Christmas Day morning, according to a statement from his family.
Franklin was a familiar face on British television, having appeared in numerous shows and films since the 1960s. He played Captain Mike Yates, a UNIT officer who worked alongside the Third Doctor, in Doctor Who from 1971 to 1974, and reprised the role in several audio dramas and spin-offs. He also portrayed Reverend Hinton, the vicar of Emmerdale village, in the popular soap opera from 2006 to 2007.
Franklin’s other credits include The Avengers, Z-Cars, Dixon of Dock Green, The Onedin Line, Survivors, Blake’s 7, Bergerac, and The Bill. He also had a cameo in the 2008 James Bond film Quantum of Solace, as a party guest.
Franklin was also a writer, director, and producer, who founded his own theatre company, The Moot Point Theatre Company, in 1980. He wrote and directed several plays, such as The Killing of Sister George, The Crucible, and The Importance of Being Earnest. He also wrote a novel, The Killing Stone, which featured his Doctor Who character Mike Yates.
Franklin’s death was announced by his friend and colleague Líam Rudden, who shared the news on Franklin’s social media account on behalf of his family. Rudden wrote: “It is with great sadness, that the family of Richard Franklin have asked me to share news of his passing, early this morning. Richard passed away peacefully in his sleep. Details of funeral arrangements will be shared here when announced. Sleep well Richard. #RIP”
Franklin is survived by his wife, Fiona, and his two children, Sam and Kate. He was also a grandfather of four. Tributes have poured in from his fans and fellow actors, who have praised his talent, charm, and generosity. He will be greatly missed by many.
