Nine more suspects have been arraigned in court over the alleged misappropriation of Sh8.5 billion meant for the construction of a Utalii College campus in Kisumu.

The suspects, who include former and current officials of the Ministry of Tourism, Utalii College, and the contractor, were charged with various counts of abuse of office, conspiracy to commit an economic crime, fraudulent acquisition of public property, and money laundering.

According to the prosecution, the suspects colluded to inflate the cost of the project from the initial Sh2.9 billion to Sh8.5 billion, and diverted funds to their personal accounts and other entities.

The court heard that the project, which was initiated in 2013, has not been completed despite the huge expenditure of public funds.

The suspects denied the charges and applied for bail, but the prosecution opposed their release, arguing that they are likely to interfere with witnesses and evidence.

The magistrate directed that the suspects be remanded in custody until Friday, when he will rule on their bail application.

The case is among the high-profile corruption cases that the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has been investigating and prosecuting in a bid to recover public funds and assets.
