TANK, Pakistan - Haji Ulmar Gul, a notorious financer of the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), was shot dead by unknown assailants along with his two associates in Tank district of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday.
According to local police, Gul and his associates were travelling in a car when they were ambushed by armed men on motorcycles near a petrol pump on Tank-Dera Ismail Khan road. The attackers opened fire at the car, killing all three occupants on the spot.
The police said that Gul was a wanted terrorist who had been involved in financing and facilitating LeT's activities in Pakistan and across the border in Afghanistan. He was also accused of having links with the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani network.
LeT is a banned Islamist organization that has carried out several deadly attacks in India, including the 2008 Mumbai attacks that killed 166 people. The group is also active in Afghanistan, where it has targeted Indian interests and security forces.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack on Gul and his associates. The police have launched an investigation to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
