Twain, 58, met music producer Robert "Mutt" Lange, 75, in 1993, when he contacted her after hearing her debut album. They married six months later and had a son, Eja, in 2001. They moved to Switzerland for a quieter life, away from the spotlight.
But in 2008, Twain's world came crashing down when she discovered that Lange was having an affair with her former best friend, Marie-Anne Thiébaud, who was also his assistant and interpreter. Thiébaud was married to Frédéric, a Swiss businessman.
Twain was devastated by the betrayal and said she was ready to die. She wrote in her memoir, From This Moment On, that she had a panic attack when she confronted Marie-Anne and called her a bad person. She also wrote an email to her, begging for her husband back.
But as Twain struggled to cope with the pain, she found an unlikely ally in Frédéric, who was also heartbroken by his wife's infidelity. The two bonded over their shared experience and became friends. They eventually realized that they had feelings for each other and started dating.
Twain and Frédéric got engaged in 2010 and married on January 1, 2011, in Puerto Rico. They have been together ever since, supporting each other's careers and raising their children. Twain has called Frédéric "a true gift" and "a miracle" in her life.
Their story is reminiscent of another celebrity spouse swap that made headlines recently. TJ Holmes, a TV anchor, and Amy Robach, a journalist, left their spouses, Marilee Fiebig and Andrew Shue, in 2022, after falling in love on the set of Good Morning America. Fiebig and Shue, who are both lawyers, have reportedly grown close in the wake of their exes' scandalous romance.
