A police officer in Eldoret has been arrested for allegedly shooting his wife dead on Wednesday morning. The officer, identified as Maina, is said to have shot Mercy Chebet twice in the chest killing her on the spot at their home in Kapsoya estate.

According to witnesses, the couple had a heated argument before the fatal incident. Neighbours said they heard gunshots and screams from the house and rushed to the scene. They found Chebet lying in a pool of blood and Maina holding a pistol.

The neighbours alerted the police who arrived and disarmed Maina. He was taken to Eldoret Central Police Station for interrogation. The motive behind the shooting is yet to be established.

Chebet's body was taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem. The couple had two children who were not at home at the time of the incident.

The incident has shocked the residents of Kapsoya estate who described the couple as friendly and peaceful. They said they had never witnessed any signs of domestic violence between them.

The police have launched an investigation into the matter and are expected to charge Maina with murder. They have also appealed to the public to seek counselling and mediation in case of marital disputes instead of resorting to violence.
