Parents of KCPE candidates from the Kitengela International School on Sunday protested at the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) offices demanding anomalies in the recently released results rectified. They said the results did not reflect the abilities of their children, who had consistently performed well in previous exams.

The parents claimed that the school, which had been ranked number one in the country for the last three years, could not have produced such poor results in 2023. They said they were 100 per cent sure that the results were not theirs and suspected a mix-up or a technical error at KNEC.

“We truly believe that those do not reflect the abilities of our kids, we are 100 per cent sure those are not our results. It can’t be that a school that has been number one in the country for the last three years all of a sudden in two years' time we don’t have top performers,” Samuel Nderitu, a parent, said.

“To me as a parent representing the parents, I believe that this is a sincere injustice to the children of Kitengela International as indicated here and also to the children of other schools in this nation,” Claudia Okumu added.

The parents demanded that KNEC address the anomalies before the selection process for secondary schools, which kicks off on Monday. They said they did not want their children to be disadvantaged by the erroneous results and miss out on their preferred schools.

KNEC officials, who held a meeting with the parents on Sunday, asked them to file official complaints within the stipulated time. They said they would look into the matter and verify the results.

The 2023 KCPE results were released on Friday by Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha. He said the performance of the candidates was commendable despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. He also said there were no cases of exam irregularities or leakage.

The KCPE candidates are expected to join Form One in January 2024.
