One year ago, a 23-year-old Kenyan man named Stephen Kariuki was arrested and sentenced to ten years in prison for illegal power installation. Recently, he appeared on Simon Kibe's Inooro TV show “Njeraini citu” to share his unfortunate and regrettable story.
Kariuki began his story by recounting his journey from completing his form four education to being mentored and trained to work with Kenya Power. Within six months, he found himself gainfully employed by the esteemed organization. For less than a year, he diligently discharged his duties, ensuring efficient power distribution and maintaining the country's electrical infrastructure.
However, destiny took a cruel turn when he decided to seize a better job opportunity offered by a private company. Full of enthusiasm, he joined the new organization where he worked tirelessly, excelling in his role. The young man's fervor for his profession earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and superiors.
Tragedy struck when Kariuki decided to take some time off work to rejuvenate and relax. During this break, he encountered an individual who sought his help with power installation, albeit through illegal means. The man had acquired electrical posts but lacked the necessary wires to bring electricity to his property. Seemingly unaware of the dire consequences that awaited him, Kariuki agreed to assist him.
One day when he was off, Kariuki decided to install electricity illegally for a customer who had everything except the wires. He went to the nearest town to detach some wires from Kenya Power's infrastructure without proper authorization. As he began his illicit activity, his actions caught the attention of curious villagers. When confronted, he resorted to lying, claiming he had been sent by Kenya Power to perform the power installation.
The villagers, skeptical of his explanation, promptly reported the incident to the authorities. Kariuki was arrested and charged with illegal power installation. He was sentenced to ten years in prison, a harsh punishment for a young man who had made a mistake.
Kariuki's appearance on Simon Kibe's Inooro TV show “Njeraini citu” is a testament to his desire to make amends for his actions. His story serves as a cautionary tale for those who may be tempted to engage in illegal activities. It is a reminder that the consequences of our actions can be severe and far-reaching.
